Eugene B. Hawn

August 28, 1933 - June 7, 2016

Eugene B. Hawn, 82, of Port Republic, passed peacefully with his family present on Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Born in Erma, NJ on August 28, 1933 to Harvey and Edith Hawn. His family moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL in 1949. Gene attended and graduated from Live Oak St. High School, N.S.B in 1952, after winning local and state awards for his basketball skills. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Korean War as a tail-gunner on a B-36 bomber. Upon discharge, he entered Glassboro State College and graduated with a degree in teaching and taught at Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin, NJ for 28 years. Gene was an avid fisherman and was owner/captain of the charter boat “Barbara Ann”. He loved to hunt and play golf but most of all, Gene loved his family. Married for 62 years to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Hawn (Wood) and proud parents of daughters, Sherril Lee (Tom), Sandra Ann (Dennis), and son Eugene F. (Ronda). He was also a loving grandfather to Pamela, Dennis, Jerry, Rachael, and Laura. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Edith; brothers, Lester and Harvey; and granddaughter, Danielle Marie. He leaves sisters, JoAnne Allen and Sharon Harvey; and nephews and nieces to cherish his life. Gene served on the Port Republic City Council, the Port Republic School Board and was a member of the Port Republic Vol. Fire Co. for some years. Visitation will be at Wimberg Funeral Home, 211 E. Great Creek Rd, Galloway 609-645-0001 on Saturday, June 11th from 10:00 – 12:00 PM with a service beginning at 12:00 PM. Interment will immediately follow at Port Republic Cemetery.
